So You Want to Ride 100 Miles?
Riding your first century (100 miles) is a huge milestone in any cyclist's journey. Whether you're a weekend rider or completely new to cycling, the Hancock Horizontal Hundred is the perfect ride to aim for.
Here's a beginner-friendly training guide to help you get ready — physically and mentally.
✅ 1. Start with Consistency
Aim for 3–4 rides per week. Even 10–20 mile rides help build your endurance base.
✅ 2. Add One Long Ride per Week
Every weekend, increase your longest ride by 5–10 miles. By week 8, you’ll be at 70–80 miles — close enough to comfortably finish 100.
✅ 3. Train on Terrain Similar to the Event
The Hancock Horizontal Hundred is known for flat, smooth roads. Look for routes that mimic that — this will help your pacing.
✅ 4. Don't Skip Nutrition Practice
Practice eating and drinking during rides. Aim for a water bottle per hour and small snacks every 45 minutes. Real food like bananas and energy chews work great.
✅ 5. Ride With Others
Group rides help with pacing and confidence. Join a local cycling club or invite friends to ride long days with you.
✅ 6. Taper the Week Before
Cut your mileage by 50% the week before the ride. Let your legs recover so you’re fresh and ready.
